ALASKA INTER-TRIBAL COUNCIL
RESOLUTION #2005-03
TITLE: Support of the need for energy assistance
WHEREAS, the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council (AITC) is a statewide consortium of sovereign tribes sharing a common bond of unique cultures, languages, spirituality, and traditional values, established in 1992 to advocate for the inherent rights of tribes in Alaska, and
WHEREAS, the Organized Village of Kake and the Native communities throughout Alaska are currently witnessing drastically high costs of fuel, and
WHEREAS, the oil extracted and sold from oil fields of Alaska benefits the State from revenues that has contributed to a projected State government budget surplus of up to $2 billion due to the recent oil price increases, and
WHEREAS, the Native communities have very limited resources for income, and
WHEREAS, the rising costs of fuel are directly linked to electrical costs and communities are also experiencing higher rates of electrical costs, and
WHEREAS, the Native community entities see the need for assistance for rising fuel and electrical costs, such as direct subsidies for heating fuel, expanded peE (power cost equalization) for electricity, and other means to lessen the burden on the very people whose resources are creating the budget surplus.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that AITC does hereby support the need for Energy Assistance for fuels and electricity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution shall be the policy of AITC until it is withdrawn or modified by subsequent resolution.
