Resolution 95-030 AI-TC
WHEREAS; it is the mission of statewide and regional Alaska Native organizations to advocate for the improvement of human health and the quality of life of our members; and
WHEREAS; Alaska Native Leaders and organizations have consistently identified poor sanitation conditions throughout rural Alaska as a high public health and social issue; and
WHEREAS; the lack of adequate sanitation facilities has led to extreme problems of environmental health in rural Alaska villages, causing high public and social costs; and
WHEREAS; the lack of basic sanitation infrastructure continues to impede rural Alaska communities to seek, develop, and attract viable economic development opportunities; and
WHEREAS; coordination, collaboration, and cooperation between village members, regional Alaska Native non-profits and statewide Alaska Native organizations, and federal and state agencies is critical for improving sanitation conditions within rural Alaska; and
WHEREAS; the management of the Alaska Area Native Health Services, the Alaska department of Environmental Conservation, and other federal and state service agencies have improved over the years due to their increased coordination and cooperation efforts; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED; that the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council strongly urge that the United States Federal Government and the State of Alaska continue to coordinate with Alaska Native leaders and community members, and regional and statewide Alaska Native organizations to insure sustained funding and adequate policy planning for improving sanitation conditions in rural Alaska.
