In Memory of Judge William “Bill” Brady, May 20, 1922 – November 14, 1995

WHEREAS; Judge, William “Bill” Brady, first Tlingit name “GUNAANASTI”, second Tlingit name “LUSTA,” also know as Rudy Jackson, passed away on November 14, 1995; and

WHEREAS; Judge, Brady selflessly devoted his life work to preserving and revitalizing the traditional law, justice and peacemaking of the Tlingit people, and

WHEREAS; Judge Brady has made invaluable and persevering contributions to the advancement and development of tribal law, justice and peacemaking for Alaska native people and helped established U.S. Supreme Court precedent for Alaska Natives under the Indian Child Welfare Act; and

WHEREAS; Judge Brady also contributed on a statewide level to tribal unity and sovereignty in his service as vice chair to the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council; and

WHEREAS; Judge Brady's lifework was directed at “Strengthening Tribes Through Unity and Sovereignty” which also serves as the theme of this annual convention; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED; that the delegates to the 1995 Annual AI-TC Convention recognize and honor Judge Brady's many contributions to tribal justice systems and sovereignty by continuing to carry on his work with respect and honor; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; that AI-TC dedicate this convention in memory of Judge Brady; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED; that the delegates to the 1995 AI-TC Convention shall observe a moment of silence upon adoption of this resolution in memory of Judge Brady. Submitted by, Sitka Tribe.
