Resolution 95-015 :: Adequate involvement in transportation planning

WHEREAS; the tribes in Alaska have not been able to have adequate involvement in transportation planning; and

WHEREAS; the Congress has established a law termed the “Intermodal Statewide Transportation Efficiency Act” (ISTEA) to ensure that tribes do have input into the infrastructure development; and

WHEREAS; the State of Alaska has failed in coordination with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to ensure that tribes are involved; and

WHEREAS; the State of Alaska does not recognize tribal jurisdiction over Indian Country in the State of Alaska; and

WHEREAS; the Stat of Alaska's lack of recogniztion has left Alaskan Tribes out of the funding from ISTEA legislation; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESLOVED; that the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council focus upon ensuring that the State of Alaska recognizes Indian Country in Alaska.
